Welcome
Welcome to Seneca Hill Perennials, a small, mostly-mail-order nursery growing a wide range of unusual plants. We are now accepting orders for spring 2008 shipping.
We invite you to enjoy Ellen, the owner's, journals and photographs from her February 2008 botanizing expedition to South Africa's Eastern Cape and Lesotho. Scroll down the menu at the left and you'll find links to all the entries.
NOTICES (please read before proceeding)
(1) Our 2008 Open Days begin on Thursday, May 8, and will continue each Thursday-Saturday through June 15. From now until we stop shipping at the end of June, the website is NOT likely to be kept up-to-date, as availability will be in a constant state of flux. If we are unable to fill a reasonable part of your order, we will consult with you before shipping.
(2) Our shopping cart is not "automated" - it doesn't do anything other than collect your ordering information and deliver it to us. It does not reserve plants nor run charges. Thus, it is possible that something you successfully order will already be sold out, even though the website sends you an automated confirmation of the order. The effective recording of your order occurs here, where we reserve your plants and e-mail you a confirmation with an attached copy of your invoice.
(3) The 2008 catalog will be the our last paper version; thereafter we will rely solely on the website. The vast majority of our orders this past year have come from the website, and the ease with which we can add entries, create "specials", add photographs, and indicate plant availability makes the website vastly superior to the static and too-soon out-of-date printed catalog.
(4) In the future (not too distant, we hope) we will add an archive, into which retired plant entries will be dropped. If you bought something from us in the past year and need to read about it, that will be the place to look.
(5) Some plants may be available BY THE FLAT . We don't maintain a wholesale price list, as we are primarily a retail operation, but sometimes we have a few extra flats of plants available. If you have something specific in mind, write or call, and we'll quote you a price on the plants plus shipping. You don't have to be a business to purchase by the flat, but you must be ready to accept immediate shipment. Plants shipped in this fashion are not individually wrapped, so may be somewhat messy upon receipt.
POT SIZES
We use several different pot sizes in production. Federal regulations require that pot sizes be given as liquid volume, and that is what you'll find at the end of each plant entry, just before the price. To help you interpret these we offer the following:
8 fl.oz.(235ml) - Mostly 2.5" square, 3.375" deep; a few are 2.25" square and 3.25" deep, so roughly 7 fl. oz.
14 fl.oz.(412ml) - 2.375" square, 5" deep tree band
1.25 pt (588ml) - 2.875" square, 5.5" deep tree band
1.5 pt (706ml) - 3.625" square, 4.5" deep bandpot
1.1 qt (1.06L) - 4.125" square, 4.875" deep
1.5 qt (1.1L) - 5" square, 5.625" deep
All plants are shipped in their pots, unless stated otherwise in plant description.
SNOW
Here's what Seneca Hill looked like in mid-February 2007, when we had had 6 or 7 feet of snow (by the time the "event" was over, we had received 10 feet in 10 days).Bet you wished you lived here.
