Zone 5 ~ Height: to 35cm/14in ~ Sun to shade, average to dry soil
A totally neat mat-forming US native fleabane, shared with us several years ago by Charles Cresson, who was given it by Dale Henderson of Virginia Beach, VA. Dale obtained it many years ago from the late Clarice Keeling, who lived and gardened with the existing native plants on 27 acres beside Virginia Beach's Lynnhaven River. The supposition is that this outstanding form of E. pulchellus was native to that property, and having traced its provenance Charles has now given it an appropriate name. 'Lynnhaven Carpet' is distinguished by its relatively large grey-green pubescent leaves (to 10cm/4in) and dense, matting habit, as well as its astonishing ability to thrive in a wide range of challenging conditions.
Eriogonum longifolium var. harperi (E. harperi)Zone 5 ~ Height: to 1.8m/6ft ~ Sun to part shade, well-drained soil
The rare Harper's Buckwheat, known from only a few scattered locations in Alabama and Tennessee, is a striking monocarp that we are eager to try here and to see growing in other gardens. The flowering stems tower above the basal rosette and bear panicles of thousands of little white flowers. Here's a link to some pictures; please hit your 'Back" button to return to this site.
Zone 4 ~ Height: to 15cm/6in ~ Partial shade, well-drained acid to neutral soil
The White Dogtooth Violet occurs naturally in upland woods from Ontario west to Minnesota and south to Kentucky and Texas. Ours are grown from stock originally collected in Illinois. The leaves are grey-green with olive mottling, and the solitary clean white flowers, with their characteristic strongly recurved petals, dance above the foliage. Three medium-sized corms, not blooming size, per pot.
Zone 3 ~ Height: to 2.1m/7ft ~ Sun to part shade, moist fertile soil
This is a great Siberian species, with large palmate leaves and huge, fluffy corymbs of fragrant pinkish-white to white flowers. Our mature plants hit 7 feet , and they are stunning. Cut the whole plant back after flowering to promote fresh new growth.
