Zone 5 ~ Height: to 1m/39in ~ Sun, average soil
A lovely US westerner which makes a substantial herbaceous "bush". The upper portion of each stem is lined with large (over 5cm/2in) lavender-pink to white "hollyhock" blooms. From seed collected at 3140m/10,300 ft in Bernalillo Co, New Mexico.
Zone 6 ~ Height: to 45cm/1.5 ft ~ Sun, well-drained soil
Second-year seedlings of this lovely selection of I. delavayii in which the typical screaming magenta flowers have been replaced by flowers of the softest rosy pink. As the seed pods mature, the stems elongate above the lustrous dark green foliage.
Zone 4 ~ Height: to 50cm/20in ~ Sun, excellent drainage
I admit to having a fondness for incarvilleas, especially the ones with huge gaudy hot-pink flowers. Unlike I. mairei, whose flowering stems elongate considerably after blooming, I. zhongdianensis's stems stay quite short, and its deeply-lobed leaves lie close to the ground, so it is well-suited to the rock garden. Native, as you might have guessed, to Zhongdian in northwestern China.
Zone 8 ~ Height: to 5cm/2in ~ Sun, good drainage (container)
A native of Uruguay, and winter-active, this little fast-multiplying corm produces its almost adpressed, twisted grassy foliage in fall, then blooms in late winter and early spring with deliciously scented clear yellow crocus-like flowers. Very full pots.
Zone 3 ~ Height: to 60cm/2ft ~ Sun, sharply drained soil
The Bush Morning-Glory, native to the sandhills prairies and western mixed-grass prairies of the US, grows as a mounding herbaceous bush. The leaves are narrow and willow-like; the large funnel-shaped flowers (7.5cm/3in) are lavender with darker throats. Forms a very large tap root over time. Zone 4 ~ Height: to 12cm/5in ~ Shade to part shade, moist to average soil, well-drained
A selection of our US woodland native Crested Iris with medium purple flowers. The flowers have relatively broad petals and a large white patch surrounding the beard.
Zone 4 ~ Height: to 10cm/4in ~ Shade to part shade, moist to average soil, well-drained
A blue-flowered form not unlike 'Powder Blue Giant' in color, but a shade darker and of a more typical size.
Zone 4 ~ Height: to 10cm/4in ~ Shade to part shade, moist to average soil, well-drained
A vigorous, highly floriferous selection of our native crested iris, far superior to the unnamed Iris cristata f. alba we used to grow.
Zone 3 ~ Height: to 15cm/6in ~ Sun, average soil
A small narrow-leaved form of this delightful eastern US native iris (formerly I. setosa subsp. canadensis. We acquired this years ago from the New England Wildflower Society's Garden in the Woods.
Zone 5 ~ Height: to 75cm/30in~ Sun, moist to wet soil
Courtesy of Joe and Wayne at North Hill, we are once again able to offer this outstanding semi-aquatic iris with strongly striped green and white foliage that stays bright all season, and large, exquisitely formed blue-lilac flowers.
